Happy Turkey Day

While preparing for Thanksgiving, I thought it would be fun to go on a search for some wild turkeys to photograph. First of all, I do not proclaim to be a professional wildlife photographer, although I do enjoy trying. Secondly, I don’t know anything about wild turkeys, other than I saw some in Heber the other day. I brought along my trusty little sidekick, Gabe, and headed out. We searched all over and found nothing. My little buddy lost his enthusiasm quickly, which put a damper on mine as well. With our morale at a record low, we gave up and started the drive home. After stopping for some treats to raise our spirit’s, we spotted some turkeys on the side of the road. Thinking they were a lot like our chickens at home, I figured we would be able to get pretty close before spooking them. I also thought that when we did scare them, they wouldn’t be able to get very far. I was wrong on both counts. The second they spotted me, they took off. I don’t think they can fly for long distances, but they were able to fly far enough away from me that there was no chance in me finding them again. There was, however, a few sickly or older turkeys that hesitated a second before fleeing, and those are the few I was able to snag a shot of to share with you all.
